Malaysian shuttlers set for stiff battle against Indians

DEFENDING champions Malaysia are set for a battle royale against hosts India for the mixed team badminton gold medal at the Siri Fort Sports Complex tonight.
Last night, Malaysia conceded a point for the first time in the competition in the semi-finals against Singapore when Wong Mew Choo lost 12-21, 21-7, 15-21 in the women’s singles match against a lower ranked Xing Aiying.
But it was smooth sailing for Malaysia in the other matches of the 3-1 win while India made it to the final with an impressive 3-0 win over England.
The mixed doubles partnership of Koo Kien Keat-Chin Eei Hui started the ball rolling with a 21-17, 21-13 win over Yao Lei-Triyachat Chayut.
World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei was given a tough time by Derek Wong before extending Malaysia’s lead with a 21-19, 21-18 win.
Then Xing Aiying gave Singapore a breather in the women’s singles but it was an inevitable conclusion with Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong taking less than 30 minutes to confirm Malaysia’s place in the final with a 21-7, 21-13 win over Hendra Wijaya-Triyachat.
Malaysia rested Chong Wei and Mew Choo in the quarter-finals against New Zealand but still had it easy in chalking up a 3-0 win. In the group stage, they scored 5-0 wins over the Isle Of Man, Seychelles, Nigeria and Australia.
Hosts India were expected to be given a tough time by England but it turned out otherwise and they looked capable of pulling off a big upset against Malaysia tonight.
Malaysia’s doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky said that they would have to field their strongest line-up against India.
“It will be a good test for our players as they are expected to play against the Indians in the individual competitions,” he said.
“We must win either the women’s doubles or mixed doubles. The Indians have Saina Nehwal and she looks good to guarantee a point for India. It will be a close affair.”
