CHINA badminton chief coach Li Yongbo has advised Lin Dan not to set the London Olympics 2012 as his final stage for glory.
“If he sets his goal to retire after the London Games, I think he will have to face a lot of difficulties in his journey in the next two years,” he said in an interview with CCTV5 on Monday. “I hope he will not make London his final stage. During my playing days, I decided that the 1992 Barcelona Games was my last competition and eventually I did not win the gold medal.”
Yongbo added that Lin Dan should enjoy playing badminton instead of thinking of retirement in the remaining years of his career.
“I hope he will continue to enjoy the game even after the London Games. If he does so, I believe he has a better chance of winning in London,” he said.
Lin Dan completed his “Grand Slam” after beating Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei in the Guangzhou Asiad singles final on Sunday.
“He has to his collection the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal, four Thomas Cup winners’ medals, three world and four All-England titles.
Yongbo said that he had not seen any player capable of surpassing Lin Dan’s achievements.
“But China have many outstanding talents who have different techniques and abilities from Lin Dan. They will walk their own path and finally end up standing on the podium,” he said.
