Koo-Tan to face formidable South Korean pair in quarter-finals at China Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have had an easy ride, by their standard, so far. But today, all that’s about to change as they face their first real challenge in the China Open in Shanghai.
Yesterday, the duo hardly broke sweat as they brushed aside China’s Lu Kai-Li Gen 21-12, 21-16 en route to the quarter-finals, which will see them facing the formidable South Korean pair of Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong.
Ironically, the Malaysians have not beaten the Korean pair in their last two meetings this year.
Second seeds Kien Keat-Boon Heong are the only Malaysian pair left in the men’s doubles after the two back-up pairs – Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah and Teo Kok Siang-Goh Wei Shem – were bundled out in the second round yesterday.
Not easy: Koo Kien Keat (left) and Tan Boon Heong beat China’s Lu Kai-Li Gen 21-12, 21- 16 to enter the quarter-finals.
Peng Soon-Khim Wah went down 16-21, 15-21 to Taiwan’s Fang Chieh-min-Lee Sheng-mu while Kok Siang-Wei Shen gave a good fight in the second game before bowing out 8-21, 16-21 to South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung.
National coach Rosman Razak has warned Kien Keat-Boon Heong to brace themselves for a tough time against the feisty Koreans today.
“It has been smooth sailing for Koo-Tan so far. They have not been tested by their younger opponents from China in the first two rounds,” said Rosman in a telephone interview.
“Tomorrow (today), the Koreans will have the psychological edge as they have beaten the Malaysians before. But Koo-Tan are in good form and I hope they will prevail against the expected strong assault from the Koreans.”
If the Malaysians win, they will play the winner of the match between Yong-dae-Jae-sung and world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China.
Malaysia challenge in the mixed doubles has also been reduced to one pair, with Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying marching into the quarter-finals with a 21-13, 21-18 win over Liao Min-chun-Chen Hsiao-huan of Taiwan.
They will take on Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol-T. Saralee for a place in the semi-final.
The Thais survived a nail-biting opening game to end the gallant run of Commonwealth Games gold medallists Kien Keat-Chin Eei Hui with a 21-19, 21-10 win.
There was double disappointment for Eei Hui when she also lost in the women’s doubles with Liu Ying.
The duo went down 7-21, 22-20, 12-21 to top seeds Cheng Weng-hsing-Chien Yu-chin of Taiwan.
