PETALING JAYA: Doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong (pic) is determined start the New Year on the right note by going back to his old ways.
He wants to enjoy an unbeaten stretch with Koo Kien Keat, just as they did in 2007.
The duo will get cracking at the Super Series Masters Finals, which begin tomorrow in Taipeh. They will also gun for glory in the Malaysia Open (Jan 18-23) and South Korea Open (Jan 25-30).
The 24-year-old Boon Heong, who left for Taipeh yesterday, said that they were ready to face the challenges.
“We hope to get a good start in Taipeh. It will certainly get our confidence going for the year,” he said.
In 2007, Boon Heong-Kien Keat bagged the Malaysian Open and went on to win the All-England and Swiss Open titles. They also did well in 2009 to win four Open titles.
Last year, they only managed to win only one Super Series event, the Malaysian Open. They came close to winning two major titles, going down in the final at the world championships in Paris and Asian Games in Guangzhou.
“This year, Kien Keat and I will concentrate only on the men’s doubles. We will have more time to focus on our game,” said Boon Heong.
“The field will be quite challenging in the men’s doubles at the Masters Finals. All the top pairs are competing and we will give our best to get the better of them.”
Boon Heong-Kien Keat will also get to regain the world No. 1 tag with good performances in the first month of the year.
The lucrative US$500,000 Masters Finals also offer valuable world ranking points for the first time. The draw for the Finals will be made today. The other seven pairs in the fray are China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and Chai Biao-Zhang Nan; Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung and Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong; Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan; Danes Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen; and Taiwanese Fang Chieh-min-Lee Sheng-mu.
The pairs will be divided into two groups of four each and the top two qualify for crossover semi-finals.
