Great start for Chong Wei in Taipeh but Koo-Tan lose again

PETALING JAYA: Lee Chong Wei got off to a convincing start in the Super Series Masters Finals in Taipeh yesterday but misery continued for Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong against second-ranked South Korean Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong.
World No. 1 Chong Wei showed no sign of being affected by the resignation of his coach, Misbun Sidek, when he took only 34 minutes to beat Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh 21-12, 21-17 in a Group A match.
He will be out to show the same fire when he takes on Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark today. Victory will give him a place in the semi-finals of the US$500,000 tournament.
Jorgensen almost got the better of his more illustrious compatriot Peter Gade-Christensen but ran out of steam to lose 11-21, 21-18, 16-21. He has to beat Chong Wei to keep alive his hopes to take one of the two spots from the group to the semi-finals.
There was an upset in Group B when Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand pulled the rug from under Indonesian Taufik Hidayat, winning 21-18, 18-21, 21-7 to enhanced his chances to qualify for the semi-finals.
There was, however, disappointment for Malaysia when Kien Keat-Boon Heong went down 15-21, 20-22 to Sung-hyun-Yeon-seong in Group A. They lost to the Koreans in all three matches last year.
National coach Rosman Razak said in a telephone interview: “We expected them to end their losing streak against this Korean pair here but it did not happen. But it is not over yet for them.
“We hope that they will recover quickly and bounce back to beat the China pair (Chai Biao-Zhang Nan).”
The young Chinese pair showed great determination in a 21-23, 21-16, 17-21 defeat by compatriots and world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng.
It was double joy for South Korea in the men’s doubles competition with Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung chalking up a hard-fought 21-16, 21-17 win over Le Sheng-mu-Fang Chieh-min of Taiwan in Group B.
