Rexy extends contract, aims to take Koo-Tan to greater heights

KUALA LUMPUR: National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky is staying put in Malaysia with the aim of taking world No. 2 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to greater heights this year.
Rexy, whose contract has been renewed for a sixth year, has come out with a comprehensive plan for Kien Keat-Boon Heong.
“My focus will be on Koo-Tan. I have looked into all their mistakes and weaknesses and, this year, I am determined to get it right with them,” said Rexy.
“I have named them for 14 tournaments and they have specific goals to achieve this year.
“They did not get off to a good start at the Super Series Masters Finals (in Taipei) due to a lack of training. But it will be rectified soon. With a more focused programme, I am confident it will be a good year for them.”
Rexy is targeting the duo to come good in two major tournaments in England – the All-England in Birmingham from March 8-13 and the World Championships in London from Aug 8-14.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong’s best year under Rexy was in 2007 when they won six international titles.
Last year was a mixed one for the Malaysians. Although Kien Keat-Boon Heong reached their first ever final in the World Championships in Paris, unfortunately they failed to retain the Asian Games gold medal in Guangzhou.
Rexy said he would also keep tabs on two other pairs – Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock – to help them qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
“I have also listed a number of tournaments for these two pairs. They are experienced and, naturally, we will be expecting more from them. It is no longer about exposure but about winning. A consistent showing will put them in the running for the Olympic Games,” he said.
Zakry-Thien How are ranked 87th in the world while Fairuzizuan-Soon Hock are in 97th position.
Rexy said he would also work closely with back-up coach Tan Kim Her and his top three charges – Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon, who are all geared towards qualification for the Olympic Games too.
“We have met and divided the tournaments between our players. We are also training together at least four times a week. We have a common goal – to establish a solid doubles department at both the elite and back-up levels,” said Rexy.
Currently, Wei Shem-Kok Siang are ranked 22nd, followed by Hee Chun-Wee Kiong at 24th. Khim Wah-Peng Soon are in 30th spot.
