Misbun’s silence over BAM offer leaves NSC guessing

KUALA LUMPUR: The deafening silence of Misbun Sidek on an offer to
reconsider his decision to quit as a singles coach has not gone down too
well with National Sports Council (NSC) director general Datuk Zolkples
Embong.
And he hoped that there will be an end to his pending
status so that the NSC can look again into assisting Badminton
Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Lee Chong Wei in the preparation for
the 2012 London Olympics.
The BAM had asked Misbun to reconsider his decision to quit but he had yet to respond to it.
In his absence, Chong Wei has been training under Tey Seu Bock and monitored by singles chief coach Rashid Sidek.
Zolkples
said that a decision by Misbun would determine whether the NSC would
have to fork out money to support hiring another coach.
After all, the NSC had been paying part of Misbun’s monthly income before he quit in a huff on Dec 31.
“Hopefully,
there will be an end to this issue soon,” said Zolkples after
announcing the nominees for the national sports awards yesterday.
Zolkples
said that he would be meeting Chong Wei after the All-England, which
ends in Birmingham on Sunday, to find out what the player wanted as far
as coaching assistance was concerned.
“I am happy that Chong Wei remains focused on training.
“He
is training well under Seu Bock. If Misbun does not return, I will ask
him whether he needs a new coach or whether he is happy with the current
arrangements,” he said.
Although the BAM hire the coaches, the
NSC are also responsible in decision making because they pay a certain
amount of the salaries.
Meanwhile, the BAM’s council meeting on April 1 will make a final decision on Misbun.
It
is likely that if Misbun does not get in touch with the BAM management
over the next few days, the council will accept his resignation without
further consideration.
