GEORGE TOWN: Two-time All England champion Lee Chong Wei said he is no longer bothered whether Misbun Sidek would be retained as his coach.
He said he had learnt to be independent during Misbun’s three-month absence.
“I have also learnt a lot from other coaches,” he said when asked to comment on Misbun’s comeback to serve as a coach with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The World No.1, however, said Misbun’s return would benefit BAM and himself.
“It is undeniable that he is a good adviser and teacher.
“Perhaps when I retire after the 2012 London Olympics, he will be able to train a the new generation of top shuttlers to replace me,” he said after a charity exhibition match at the Dewan Tunku Geodesic Dome in Komtar here to raise funds for the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Chong Wei played against four players on the opposite side of the net and still came out tops winning 21-15 against Penang state players Tan Jia Wei and Goh Jin Wei, former state player Tan Thien Hua and his brother Lee Chong Eng in about 15 minutes.
Today Chong Wei will be playing Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat in another exhibition match at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara to collect funds for the same cause.
Ironically, Chong Wei’s comments on Misbun yesterday, contrasted with what he said in January about leaving and following Misbun if he does not return as BAM coach.he 29-year-old Chong Wei entered four finals – Super Series Masters, Malaysian Open, South Korea Open and All-England – in the last three months.
Except for the South Korea Open, he won the other three, including his famous straight-game win over Lin Dan en route to retain his All-England title last month.
