Pei Tty-Eei Hui raise hope for Malaysia to remain in Div 1

KUALA LUMPUR: The return of women’s doubles pair Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui has raised Malaysia’s hope to retain their place in Division One of Sudirman Cup mixed team badminton championships, which will be played in Qingdao from May 22-29.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) included the duo when they named their 12-member team yesterday for the championships.
Pei Tty, making a comeback after a knee surgery last year that put her out of action for almost eight months, gave a creditable showing in the Australian Open in Melbourne and with Eei Hui defied the odds to reach the final.
And the result gave the BAM the confidence on their ability to fight for a point in a Sudirman Cup tie.
Initially, there was fear that the Malaysian team may be relegated to Division Two in the absence of Mew Choo and the uncertainty over the condition of the 30-year-old Pei Tty.
The BAM coaching and training chairman, Ng Chin Chai, admitted that Mew Choo, who quit the national team ’s after the All-England last month, would have brightened Malaysia’s chances to repeat a top-four finish.
“We have finalised the team for Sudirman Cup and we are happy with the return of Pei Tty-Eei Hui. Our goal is to remain in Division One,” he said.
The others in the team are Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Chan Peng Soon-Hoon Thien How, Lydia Cheah, Tee Jing Yi, Goh Liu Ying and Vivian Hoo.
Malaysia are the sixth seeds behind defending champions China, Denmark, Indonesia, Taiwan and South Korea.
The Division One will have 12 teams divided into four groups of three. The other teams are seventh seeds Thailand followed by Japan, Germany, India, England and Russia.
Meanwhile, Chin Chai announced that Mew Choo would take over from Chi Shanrong of China as the girls’ singles coach at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS). Her task is to prepare the players to win honours at the Asian and world junior championships.
Shanrong has been promoted to take the post in the national women’s singles squad vacated by Wong Tat Meng and he will be assisted by Woon Sze Mei.
Two BJSS girls’ singles shuttlers – Sonia Cheah and Yang Li Lian, who did well under the charge of Shanrong – have also been promoted to the national team.
