Chong Wei stays on course for fourth Indonesian Open crown

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty marched into the quarter-finals of the men’s singles and women’s doubles events in the Indonesian Open in Jakarta yesterday.
But it was the exits of several seeded players, including China’s Lin Dan, that stunned the crowd.
Top seed Chong Wei stayed on track to win his fourth Indonesian Open title – and third in a row – when he knocked out Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong 21-17, 21-12 in just 29 minutes.
The world No. 1 will take on Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh for a place in the semi-finals.
Second seed Lin Dan’s misery continued for the second week in a row when he fell 12-21, 18-21 to Sho Sasaki of Japan in 39 minutes in a second round match.

It was Lin Dan’s first loss to Sasaki in five meetings over five years.
On Sunday, the Chinese ace had conceded a walkover to compatriot Chen Jin in the final of the Singapore Open.
National coach Teh Seu Bock said that while Chong Wei was playing well, Lin Dan did not look too good on court.
“Chong Wei is relaxed and carried out his task well. It was quite windy in the stadium but he adapted to it quickly,” said Seu Bock in a telephone interview.
“Lin Dan, however, was not playing at full force (against Sasaki) today. There was no fire in him. Maybe he is saving his energy for the World Championships (in London from Aug 8-14).”
Eei Hui-Pei Tty will be looking to exact revenge over Vita Marissa-Nadya Melati of Indonesia in the quarter-finals today. The duo suffered a surprise defeat to the Indonesians in the second round of the Singapore Open last week.
Malaysia’s top pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong also made it to the quarter-finals after defeating Japan’s Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato 20-22, 21-19, 21-18 in a 66-minute battle.
They will take on Indonesians Bona Septano-Mohd Ahsan for a place in the semis.
The other seeded players who crashed out yesterday were men’s doubles second seeds Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae of South Korea and sixth seeds Fang Chieh-min-Lee Sheng-mu of Taiwan and women’ singles top seed Wang Shixian of China.
