YONEX-SUNRISE BWF WORLD SUPER SERIES 2009 - Malaysia, Denmark dominate finals

“The final is a different ball game.”

If there was one common theme among the finalists of the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Super Series, this was it.

Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena Frier Kristiansen said it. So did Carsten Mogensen-Mathias Boe, Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty. Ss-Finals-SF-juliane

The message was the same – whatever the outcome of the preliminary stage matches, it will not make any difference on finals day.

Kamilla-Lena were beaten by Eei Hui-Pei Tty in a preliminary Group A match. Mogensen-Boe were also bested by Korea’s Jung-Lee in a preliminary Group B match.

But all the players warned against reading too much into past results.

“The final is a different ball game altogether. Although we beat them in the group stage, both of us had already qualified for the semi-finals and it is hardly any gauge of what we are both capable of playing,” said Yong Dae after the Koreans straight games win over Malaysia’s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Tazari, 21-14, 21-11.

The Koreans will play Denmark’s Mogensen-Boe whom they beat in the preliminary round 21-16, 21-16.

“We have had a very good season this year and now that we are in the final, we can finish the season on a high note,” said Boe. SS-Finals-SF-saina

There, however, was some cheer for the home fans when Lee Chong Wei and Eei Hui-Pei Tty qualified for the finals of the men’s singles and women’s doubles respectively.

In the first semi-final session in the morning, Wong Mew Choo also qualified for the women’s singles final leaving Malaysia with three representatives in the final.

The Danes also have three representatives with finalists in the women’s doubles, mixed doubles and men’s doubles.

Chong Wei stopped Denmark’s Peter Gade 21-17, 21-16 to stay on track to defend to his title won in Kota Kinabalu last year.

In the women’s singles, Saina Nehwal from India could not follow in the footsteps of her mixed doubles compatriots (V. Diju-Jwala Gutta) and bowed out to Germany’s Juliane Schenk, 21-18, 21-18. Schenk will take on Mew Choo in the final.

Finals:

Men’s singles: Lee Chong Wei (MAS) vs Park Sung Hwan (KOR); Women’s singles: Wong Mew Choo (MAS) vs Juliane Schenk (GER), Men’s doubles: Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae (KOR) vs Carsten Mogensen-Mathias Boe (DEN); Women’s doubles: Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty (MAS) vs Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena Frier Kristiansen (DEN); Mixed doubles: V. Diju-Jwala Gutta (IND) vs Joachim Fischer Nielsen- Christinna Pedersen (DEN).
