WILSON SWISS OPEN 2010: No happy ending for Gade, Ella
News 9:25 AM
After the high on Friday, both Peter Gade and Ella Diehl were bundled out of the WILSON Swiss Open in Basel while Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong qualified for their third Swiss Open final.
Gade, who scored an emphatic win over China’s world champion Lin Dan on Friday, gave his best but it was not enough to stop 2007 World Junior champion Chen Long from carving out a 22-20, 21-17 win over the Dane.
The Chinese will play teammate Chen Jin for the title on Sunday.
In the women’s singles, China’s Wang Shixian beat Ella in straight games 21-13, 21-10 to end her fairy tale run in Basel. On Friday, Ella beat China’s Lu Lan, gold medallist at last year’s World Championships in Hyderabad.
However, in the men’s doubles, some order was restored with top seeds Koo-Tan winning a thrilling battle against Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen. The Malaysians scored a 21-13, 28-26 win to clinch their place in the final.
Koo-Tan, winners in Basel in 2007 and 2009, began on an aggressive to force the Danes to backpedal and combined with a solid defensive display as well, wrapped up the first game rather easily, 21-13.
Although the Danes recovered to put up a much stiffer resistance in the second game, the Malaysians held their nerves to emerge triumphant.
The Malaysians will take on South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong who continued their fine run with a 21-13, 21-13 win over Japan’s Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata.
The Koreans had earlier in the tournament shown teammates and World Championships silver medallists Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae the exit.
But there was no happy ending for Korea’s Bae Youn Joo who lost tamely to China’s Jiang Yanjiao 21-9, 21-8.
Korea, however, is assured of one title when Shin Baek-cheol-Yoo Hyun-young upset Denmarl’s world champions Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl 12-21, 21-15, 24-22 to qualify for the mixed doubles final.
The Koreans will take on teammates Lee Yong Dae-Lee Hyo Jung in the final after the latter received a walkover from Poland’s Robert Mateusiak-Nadiezda Kostiuczyk.
