WILSON SWISS OPEN 2010: Palyama on song, Chinese armada march on
News 9:23 AM
China’s singles army was denied honours at the All England Championships last week.
But on Wednesday, the Chinese armada, led by three-time world champion Lin Dan, progressed unscathed at the Wilson Swiss Open in St Jakobshalle in Basel.
Also through were Chen Jin and Chen Long in the men’s singles and Wang Yihan, the losing finalist in Birmingham, Lu Lan, Jiang Yanjiao and Wang Shixian in the women’s singles.
At the All England Championships last week, China only won the mixed doubles and women’s doubles titles.
In Birmingham, Japan’s Kenichi Tago denied China the opportunity to go for the men’s singles title when he upset Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai en route to the final. Tago eventually lost the final to Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, who has skipped Basel.
In the women’s singles, Yihan, the defending champion, was beaten by Denmark’s Tine Rasmussen in the final.
On Wednesday, Lin Dan, looking for his first Super Series title in 2010, beat Poland’s Wacha Przemyslaw 21-10, 21-12 to check into the second round. The Chinese, however, faces a tricky encounter against Korea’s Shon Wan Ho.
Chen Jin and Chen Long also recorded wins over Marc Zwiebler and Christian Boesiger respectively.
Tago, also continued his fine run with a win over India’s Chetan Anand and will be out to scalp another Chinese player in the form of Du Pengyu in the second round.
Other notable names to go through in the men’s singles are former Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and Denmark’s Peter Gade, semi-finalist in Birmingham.
But it was another disappointing outing for Denmark’s Jan Jorgensen who crashed out to Netherlands’ Dicky Palyama 14-21, 10-21. In Birmingham, Jorgensen also lost in the first round to China’s Chen Long.
In the women’s singles, Tine Rasmussen is also absent, paving the way for Wang Yihan and company to dominate the event.
Yihan, the top seed, beat Netherlands’ Yao Jie 21-18, 21-12 while Yanjiao, No 2 seed, beat Scotland’s Susan Eglestaff 21-7, 21-3.
In the men’s doubles, Denmark’s Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen and Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, the gold and silver medallist respectively in Birmingham, also recorded wins.
Paaske-Rasmussen beat Switzerland’s Titon Gustaman-Agung Ruhanda (19-21, 21-18, 21-11) while Boe-Mogensen ended Malaysia’s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohamed Fairuzizuan Tazari’s campaign (21-12, 21-14).
