WILSON SWISS OPEN 2010: Top seeds sent packing
News 9:23 AM
Upsets ruled the second round of the WILSON Swiss Open as China’s Zheng Bo-Ma Jin, Wang Yihan and Korea’s Lee Yong Dae-Jung Jae Sung were sent crashing out at the St Jakobshalle in Basel.
In the men’s singles, All England Championships silver medallist Kenichi Tago was also shown the exit by China’s Du Pengyu.
Also through to the quarter-finals were Pengyu’s compatriots – Lin Dan, Bao Chen Jin and Chen Long.
Lin Dan, playing in only his second tournament of the year, defeated Korea’s Shon Wan Ho 21-11, 21-14 to book his place in the last eight. In Birmingham, Lin Dan was beaten by teammate Bao Chunlai in the second round.
Chen Jin also cruised into the quarter-finals with a 21-19, 21-11 win over Denmark’s Joachim Persson and will take on Vietnam’s No 1 – Nguyen Tienh Minh, the No 7 seed.
Netherland’s Dicky Palyama, after his sensational win over Denmark’s Jan Jorgensen in the first round, failed to rise to the occasion and crashed out to Hong Kong’s Hu Yun.
Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat also saw his campaign brought to haly by Japan’s Kazushi Yamada in straight games.
The Indonesian, playing as an independent, hardly got into his stride as he fell to a 21-15, 21-12 defeat at the hands of the Japanese.
But the major upsets were in the mixed doubles and men’s doubles.
In the mixed doubles, Zheng Bo-Ma Jin, the top seeds, lost to Chinese Taipei’s Chen Hung Ling-Chen Wen Hsing 14-21, 16-21. No 2 seeds Lee Yong Dae-Lee Hyo Jung, however, survived their match against Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty to book their quarter-final berth.
But in the men’s doubles, Yong Dae, with Jung Jae Sung, did not fare well as the world championships silver medalists were shown the exit by teammates Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong in three games, 21-17, 20-22, 23-25.
Ko-Yoo’s reward is a last eight match against Denmark’s Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen, winners of the All England last week.
The Danes’ compatriots, Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen also stayed on track for the title when they beat Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo-Yoshiteru Hirobe 21-15, 21-19.
In the women’s singles, China’s top stars – reigning world champion Lu Lan, world No 1 Wang Yihan, No 6 seed Wang Shixian and No 2 seed Jiang Yanjiao all progressed to the last eight stage.
However, Wang Yihan, world No 1 and top seed, was stunned by Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin 21-17, 24-22, bringing to an end a dreadful two-week period for the Chinese.
