News 10:46 AM
It is fast turning out to be one of the most open contests in the history of the BWF World Junior Championships.
China’s stranglehold in the men’s singles was stopped by Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen as both China and Malaysia failed to get any player in the semi-finals. India, however, have two players – Sai Praneet and H.S Prannoy who can make it an all-India final. The other player to qualify for the semi-finals was South Korea’s Kang Ji Wook.
Axelsen secured an unexpected win after beating #1 ranked player Huang Yuxiang from China in three games, 21-12, 11-21, 21-16 at the CODE D.ome in Guadalajara, Mexico on Friday.
However, Yuxiang remains in the competition since 32 positions need to be ranked for possible qualification to the Singapore Youth Olympic Games.
Kang scalped Thailand’s Pisit Poodchalat, the No 3-4th seed, 19-21, 21-14, 21-19 to secure his place in the last four while Praneet and Prannoy beat Indonesia’s Riyanto Subagja and China’s Liu Kai respectively.
In the semi-finals, Axelsen will take on Praneet while Kang will go up against Prannoy.
In the women’ singles, defending champion Ratchanok Inthanon from Thailand continued her winning ways when she beat Germany’s Fabienne Deprez with a final score of 21-19 and 21-7.
No 2 seed Suo Di from China also stayed on track for a final showdown against Ratchanok when she beat India’s P.V. Sindhu 13-21, 21-17, 21-15.
Japan have two players in the semi-finals with Naoko Fukuman and Misaki Matsutomo recording wins over Spain’s Carolina Marin and Malaysia’s Sonia Cheah respectively.
Malaysia’s lack of progress in the singles was compensated in the doubles when Ow Yao Han-Lai Pei Jin qualified for the semi-finals in the mixed doubles and Nelson Heg Wei Kiat-Teo Ee Yi and Yao Han-Yew Hong Kheng qualified for the men’s doubles semi-finals.
China are again unrepresented in the men’s doubles with Hong Kong’s Lee Chun Hei-Ng Ka Long taking the fourth spot in the last four.
In the women’s doubles, however, China will have two pairs with Tang Jianhua-Xia Huan and Bao Yixin-Ou Dongni trying to make it an all-China final.
Out to stop them will be South Korea’s Choi Hye In-Lee So Hee and Denmark’s Sandra Marie Jensen-Line Kjaersfeldt.
