PETALING JAYA: Doubles pairs Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying made it to the semi-finals of the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in New Delhi on a day when all the other Malaysian challenges were wiped out.
Khe Wei-Vivian scored a 26-24, 11-21, 21-19 win in a 77-minute battle yesterday against Indonesians Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii to storm into the women’s doubles semi-finals.
Just a month ago, the country’s top pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty had lost to the Indonesians in the opening round of the All-England.
Khe Wei-Vivian, who are now certain to be named in the squad for the Uber Cup Finals, will take on Thailand’s Savitree Amitapai-Vacharaporn-Munkit for a place in the final.
In the mixed doubles, seventh seeds Peng Soon-Liu Ying defeated Japanese Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Mizuki Fujii 18-21, 21-16, 21-9 to set up a semi-final match against Indonesians Devin Lahardi-Lilyana Natsir.
It was, however, a disappointing end for Mohd Hafiz Hashim. He failed to keep his momentum going in the tournament yesterday and went down to a 9-21, 21-17, 10-21 quarter-final defeat by Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana.
It was also the end of road for two men’s doubles pairs – Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How.
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong went down 21-19, 15-21, 18-21 to top seeds Chen Hung-ling-Lin Yu-lang of Taiwan while Soon Hock-Thien How lost 18-21, 17-21 to South Koreans Cho Gun-woo-Yoo Yeon-seong.
Malaysia’s interest in the women’s singles also came to an end following the exit of Wong Mew Choo.
