SUHANDINATA CUP 2010: Koreans end Malaysia's dream

South Korea denied Malaysia a grudge tie against China when they beat the Malaysians 3-2 to advance to the final of the BWF World Junior Championship Suhandinata Cup at the CODE Dome in Guadalajara, Mexico.
China, as expected, brushed off the challenge from Indonesia to book their place in the final.Mexico, buoyed by a small but boisterous crowd, marched relentlessly in their match against Puerto Rico with the mixed doubles pair of Aileen Chinaz-Luis Trejo beat Irytsha Gonzalez-Heriberto Torres 21-16, 23-21 to give a rousing start for the home team.
In men’s singles, Andres Lopez, who has been the best Mexican player in the tournament, continued his impressive performance with a 21-16, 21-14 win over Alejandro Guzman. Marian Ugalde sealed Mexico’s win with a 21-11, 21-13 win against Daneysha Santana.
But it was the Malaysia-South Korea that had the fans entertained as both teams showed great determination to win the tie.
The Koreans raced to a 2-0 lead before Zulkifli Zulfadli pulled one point back for the Malaysians. The Malaysian was in his element, mixing up his strokes, to frustrate Ha Young Woong 21-11, 21-15.
Ow Yao Han, who won the men’s doubles title last year with Chooi Kah Ming, once again came to Malaysia’s rescue, this time teaming up with Hong Kheng Yew to defeat Kang Ji Wook-Choi Seng Il to draw level on points.
But the Koreans, sensing victory, were all fired up with the women’s doubles pair of Choi Hye In-Lee So Hee firing on all cylinders to chalk up a convincing 21-10, 21-4 win over Sonia Cheah-Yang Li Lian to put Korea in the final.
The team event ends on Monday with the individual events for the Bimantara Cup scheduled to start on Wednesday.
