KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari are set to play the second doubles for Malaysia in the Thomas Cup Finals after getting back into the good books of coach Rexy Mainaky.
After assessing the players in training, Rexy said that he would prefer to go for experience in forming the team for next month’s Finals.
Rexy had his reservations over the Zakry-Fairuzizuan pairing after the duo dished out a string of uninspiring performances since reaching the semi-finals of the World Championships in India last August.
He contemplated choosing either Fairuzizuan or Zakry to form a partnership with a younger player but he has had a change of heart.
“Zakry-Fairuzizuan have experience on their side. They lived up to our expectations in the last Thomas Cup Finals (in Jakarta in 2008),” said Rexy.
“We will continue to monitor their performances in training. For now, we are more concerned in selecting our best third pair for the Finals.”
Meanwhile, Rexy appreciated the presence of independent pairs Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen to provide quality sparring for those in the training squad.
