KUALA LUMPUR: There will be special touches from previous masters of the game to strengthen the doubles department of the team gearing up for the Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.
For a start, doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky will bring in Jalani Sidek to give input to identify and select the best combinations for the Finals.
Jalani, a member of the Malaysian team who last won the Thomas Cup in Kuala Lumpur in 1992, turned up at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday to take up the challenge.
“Rexy has asked me to give my views. I will be present during training over the next few weeks, especially when Rexy tries out different combinations,” said Jalani who is popularly known as Jack.
“Right now, the main concern is to identify the third pair. I have the experience and I will give my input as best as I can. The final decision belongs to Rexy.”
World No. 1 and Swiss Open runners-up Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are assured of their places.
Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari are likely to get the nod while the last two players will be from among these pairs – Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock, Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon and Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong.
The team of coaches – Rexy, Tan Kim Her, Rosman Razak and Jeremy Gan – will have to make up their minds before the deadline for entries by name on April 23.
Jalani said that it was important for the players to give their best in training without any distraction and for this reason he felt that it was untimely for the BAM president, Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, to sack P. Ganga Rao as the honorary secretary.
“I am not taking sides but I think that it’s just not right, especially when we have less than a month to the Finals,” he said.
“It will disrupt the players’ concentration. They may be harassed by inquisitive people, who want to know more about the issue,” he said
“It also does not seem right to bring disrepute to someone like this. After all, Ganga has served the association for a long time. He is an international figure. If his services are not required, a proper succession plan should have taken place after the Thomas Cup Finals.
“Anyway, this is the view of a former player and I hope that the players will put aside the matter and give their hearts, minds and souls to training.”
Rexy was happy with the presence of Jalani to add more depth to the team.
“He is a former Thomas Cup winner and we can bank on his experience to strengthen our team. In fact, it will be great if the other former players can come in and help the team too,” he said. “I will encourage former Thomas Cuppers to turn up at the training venue to motivate our players. Their presence and support can do the players a world of wonders.”
The last time Malaysia hosted the Thomas Cup Finals was in 2000 and the team didn’t even make it to the semi-finals.
