KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles shuttler Ng Hui Lin has come to Malaysia’s rescue before. And she is ready to do it again in the Uber Cup Finals.
The 22-year-old Hui Lin(pic) has a unique role to play in the team’s challenge. She does not have a regular partner but can pair up with any of the other shuttlers in the team and still produce the goods.
At the Laos SEA Games last December, she proved her versatility by teaming up with Woon Khe Wei at second doubles to pull off an upset over the more experienced Lilyana Natsir-Greysia Polii and clinch the winning point for Malaysia in the final against Indonesia.
Winning the match earned Malaysia their first SEA Games women’s team gold in 34 years.
Hui Lin is looking forward to playing a more prominent role in a second outing in the Uber Cup Finals.
“I have paired up with everyone in the team either for a long or short period. If I am fielded, I will certainly give my best,” she said.
In the last Finals in Jakarta in 2008, Hui Lin teamed up with Chin Eei Hui in the tie against Denmark but they failed to get a point for Malaysia.
“I am more experienced now. I will be able to handle the situation better and complement better with whoever is assigned to partner me,” she said.
Malaysia will not have singles players Julia Wong and Lydia Cheah in the team but Hui Lin said that there was no reason for them to throw in the towel.
“It is unfortunate that injuries have kept them out of the team but I am happy for their replacements. It will be a whole new experience for them,” she said.
Julia and Lydia have been replaced by Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah.
Malaysia are in Group A with defending champions China and the United States. They have a good chance to reach the quarter-finals but their target is to take Malaysia to a first-ever semi-finals.
