Indonesia's Sony is back and raring for action

SONY Dwi Kuncoro has set his heart and mind to play for Indonesia in the Finals. And that is good news for the 13-time champions.
He went through a two-hour training session with the team yesterday and did not show any sign of being bothered by a back injury, which forced him to retire from the second singles match of a Group D tie on Monday against India’s Arvind Bhat.
But Sony will have to wait for the green light from the team doctor.
“The Thomas Cup Finals is so important to my team and at this time, I do really want to play,” he said.
“The medical team are monitoring my condition. I had an acupuncture treatment yesterday. I am all right for the time being but it will be good to wait for the doctor’s report.
“It was also good that I was able to join my team-mates in training today. I did not overdo it and I felt good to sweat it out.”
It will be difficult for Indonesia without Sony at second singles. In his absence, Indonesia have no other choice but to field Taufik Hidayat, Simon Santoso and Dyonisius Yahom Rumbaka for the three singles.
Team manager Yacob Rusdianto was happy that Sony did not complain of pain after the training session yesterday.
“That is a positive sign for us. But we want to be very sure of his condition,” he said.
“We may rest him for another day before fielding him or we may decide to let him play (in the quarter-finals). It will all depend on the team’s collective decision.”
Yacob added that Indonesia were still confident of their chances with youngster Dyonisius in their line-up.
”The standard of our singles are about the same and all the players had prepared well. We have faith in all of them,” he said.
