Jing Yi game for the experience of playing bigger role

NATIONAL Grand Prix Finals champion Tee Jing Yi (pic) thought she would have to warm the bench again when she was selected for the Malaysian Uber Cup squad.
But last-minute withdrawals of Lydia Cheah and Julia Wong due to knee injuries have thrown Jing Yi in a different situation.
The 19-year-old Penangite has to assume a bigger responsibility as the third ranked singles player in the team now that Lydia and Julia have been replaced by Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah respectively.
Sannatasah is the second ranked player in the team.
National No. 1 Wong Mew Choo will carry the main hope of delivering a point from the singles but Jing Yi can expect to be fielded for Malaysia’s opening Uber Cup tie against the United States tonight.
“I made my Uber Cup debut in Jakarta two years ago but did not get a chance to play a match,” said Jing Yi, who is now ranked 162nd in the world. “I can expect to play in most of the ties this time and I’m happy to get this chance. But I’m sad as it has to be at the expense of Lydia and Julia.
“No matter what, the experience gained will make me a better player. It is a big responsibility but I will try to do my best. I also have to keep my nerves in check during matches.”
Jing Yi had suffered a slip in form after being together with the 2008 Uber Cup team. However, she managed to come up again to help Malaysia regain the Asian junior team title.
Meanwhile, skipper and doubles specialist Wong Pei Tty is recovering from a leg injury and coach Rexy Mainaky may rest her for the tie against the Americans.
Malaysia can opt to have her partner, Chin Eei Hui, form a scratch pairing or stick to the combinations of Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo amd Goh Liu Ying-Ng Hui Lin.
Malaysia need to beat the Americans to secure a passage to the quarter-final from Group A, which has defending champions China.
In yesterday’s opening ties in the Uber Cup Finals, Indonesia, who were runners-up when they hosted the event in 2008, started on a winning note by thrashing Australia 5-0 in Group B.
Japan suffered an early setback in their Group C tie against Germany when their No. 1 singles player Eriko Hirose lost 15-21, 12-21 to European championship runner-up Juliane Schenk. But they came back strongly to win the remaining matches.
