Thomas Cup: Demoralising loss exposes lack of quality in Malaysian team

MALAYSIA's demoralising 0-3 defeat by China in the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup Finals at the Putra Stadium yesterday exposed the lack of quality in the team.
That is the frank assessment of national singles and doubles chief coaches, Rashid Sidek and Rexy Mainaky respectively, in the immediate aftermath of yesterday's humilation.
“Today, China proved that they have a better team than ours. China's players showcased better quality. Our players tried their best but they were simply not good enough,” said Rashid.
“They were in total control of the game. They certainly deserved to win.”
Rashid said that China also had the better strategy - by targeting only the major tournaments.
“Lin Dan was not doing well in the last few tournaments but this time, he showed his class and quality. He was a class above Chong Wei,” said Rashid.
“Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng also hardly come out but when it comes to major tournaments, they rise to the occasion. They are a determined lot.”
Rashid said they would have to review their current set-up.
“Yes, we lack players of quality. But we have to look into this and develop new talents if we are to end our hope of lifting the Thomas Cup again,” he said.
Rexy was also disappointed that Kien Keat-Boon Heong failed to live up to their top billing.
“The Chinese pair were in better form and had more depth to their game today. Overall, they had a better game plan. They were faster and possessed great speed,” said Rexy. “There is more work to be done.”
