PETALING JAYA: Malaysia experienced one of their worst outings in the Singapore Open when their challenge were wiped out in the quarter-finals following the defeats of Lee Chong Wei and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen.
Yesterday, world number one and top seed Chong Wei had appeared to be unbeatable, at least until half way through the match against his nemesis Sony Dwi Kuncoro (pic) of Indonesia, before losing 21-7, 19-21, 15-21.
The Malaysian took the opening game in sensational style and continued to hold court until 15-12 in the second.
It was at this stage that Sony got back into the groove.
Chong Wei, the 2008 Singapore Open champion, squandered his three-point lead when it mattered most to allow the Indonesian to force a decider with a 21-19 win.
Sony Dwi Kuncoro Hopes were high on Chong Wei to turn the tide in the rubber game but he was outplayed by a confident Sony who went on to win 21-15. Sony will take on India’s rising star P. Kashyap today while the other semi-final will be between Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark and Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana.
The defeat dashed Chong Wei’s hopes of making up for the disappointment at the Thomas Cup Finals at home last month.
Then, he was demoralised by Lin Dan of China in the first singles and Malaysia went on to lose 0-3 to the eventual champions.
Before Chong Wei’s campaign came to an end, independent players Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen were also shown the exit in the last eight.
The duo, currently ranked 15th in the world, went down 17-21, 10-21 to South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong in the men’s doubles.
They had hoped to avenge the defeat of their compatriots Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong who lost to the same pair just a day ago but they found the Koreans too hot to handle.
Sung-hyun-Yeon-seong will take on Howard Bach-Tony Gunawan of United States while Indonesia’s Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan will face off with Taiwan’s Fang Chieh-min-Lee Sheng-mu in the semi-final match.
