Chong Wei’s path unlikely to get easier, says coach Misbun

PETALING JAYA: China’s Bao Chunlai (pic) may have done a favour for world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei once this year.
But Malaysia’s singles coach Misbun Sidek said that the same was not expected from Chunlai in the world championships, which will be held in Paris from Aug 23-29.
Misbun said that he did not think that Chunlai would be able to get past compatriot Lin Dan if they were to meet again.
Chunlai and Lin Dan are in the same half of the draw with Chong Wei. The top seeded Malaysia is tipped to play against either one of the Chinese in the semi-finals.
At the All-England this year, Chong Wei’s path was made a little easier when Chunlai defeated Lin Dan for the first time in a quarter-final match.
The inconsistent Chunlai lost to Kenichi Tago Kenichi in the semi-finals. Chong Wei fended off a strong challenge from the Japanese before nailing a first All-England title.
Misbun feels that Lin Dan will still be passionate of winning in the world title even though he had won it thrice.
“The draw for Lin Dan also does not look too easy but I reckon that this player will be able to go all the way. He has not come out as often as Chong Wei for tournaments this year and I am sure he is waiting to strike at a big tournament like the world championships,” said Misbun.
Lin Dan is expected to play against Chunlai in the third round. If he advances, he will likely take on South Korean Park Sung-hwan for a place in the semi-finals.
“Sung-hwan is also another player who is capable of pushing Lin Dan to the limit. It will be more challenging for Lin Dan to pull through the last eight,” said Misbun.
On Chong Wei’s preparation, Misbun is determined to help the player stay focused, especially during the final week leading to the championships.
“At this stage, it is all about having the right attitude and frame of mind going into the championships. I think, this is Chong Wei another best chance to achieve his childhood dream. He is capable and I hope he will pull it off,” said Misbun.
Chong Wei, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals at the last championships in India last year, is in the same quarter with compatriot Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and Tago.
Malaysia have never won a world championship title and the best effort thus far in the men’s singles was a runner-up finish by Wong Choong Hann in 2003.
