Julia’s season over as she undergoes op

PETALING JAYA: National women’s singles player Julia Wong will undergo reconstructive surgery today to mend her left knee and will be out of action for the rest of the year.

The injury has dashed her hopes of making her first appearance in the world championships, which will be held in Hyderabad from Aug 10-16.

The Damansara Specialist Hospital consultant orthopaedic and sports injury surgeon, Dr Gan Eng Cheng, said that Julia not only had torn two major ligaments but also the meniscus.

“It’s a serious knee injury. She torn her ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and MCL (medial collateral ligament). But she is still young and has a good chance of making a good recovery,” he said.

“We will operate on her tomorrow morning to reconstruct and clean up her knee. She will be put on crutches after that and we plan to put her on light exercise immediately to make sure the muscles do not harden. But she needs six to seven months of complete rest from intensive sports activities.”

Besides the world championships, the 22-year-old Julia will miss playing in the remaining eight legs of the Super Series. There is also doubt over her ability to make a return for the Laos SEA Games in December.

Julia sustained the injury while trying to retrieve a shot from Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin in the women’s singles match of a Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships group tie in Guangzhou on Monday.
