KUALA LUMPUR: Women’s singles shuttler Wong Mew Choo is expected to return to action with her battery fully charged after missing the action in the tie against Hong Kong in the Sudirman Cup yesterday.
National singles chief coach Rashid Sidek said that Mew Choo was rested in the tie against Hong Kong so she can be fresh for the crucial final Group A tie against Denmark on Thursday.
A win against Denmark will help Malaysia reach the Division One semi-finals for the first time in the world mixed team event.
She is expected to play against Nanna Brosolat Jensen, who is filling up the shoes left vacant by Tine Rasmussen who is recovering from an injury.
A day ago, Mew Choo kept Malaysia’s interest alive in the tie against South Korea when she played well to beat Hwang Hye-joun to put Malaysia back on level terms at 2-2.
Her effort however, ended in vain when Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty failed to clinch the winning point against Lee Kyung-won-Lee Hyo-jung in the women’s doubles.
Rashid said that Mew Choo was not troubled by injury.
Mew Choo had to take a three-month break earlier this year due to a knee injury. She made a return at the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) and the Indian Open last month but she was not impressive.
“She is playing much better now. We can feel her enthusiasm and confidence in the game again. But she is not at her best yet,” said Rashid.
Rashid hoped that a better showing in the Sudirman Cup would put Mew Choo in good stead ahead of the World Championships in Hyderabad, India, from Aug 10-16.
The other player to miss yesterday’s action was young mixed doubles shuttler Ng Hui Lin.
Coach Rexy Mainaky also did not field Hui Lin against South Korea.
