If Korea’s Lee Yong Dae-Lee Hyo Jung were shown the exit on Wednesday, it was Tine Rasmussen’s turn on Thursday to suffer the same fate as Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun took the spotlight with a 21-15, 21-16 victory over the Dane.
In fact, Koreas had a relatively good day in the office with Bae Seung Hee causing another upset when she beat China’s No 5 seed Wang Xin 21-12, 21-14 to check into the quarter-finals of the US$300,000 VICTOR Korea Open Super Series 2010 at the Olympic Fencing Stadium in Seoul.
Meanwhile Tao Jiaming-Zhang Yawen followed up from their impressive win over Yong Dae-Hyo Jung on Wednesday with another clinical performance, needing just 34 minutes to subdue Japan’s Naoki Kawamae-Matsuo Shizuka, 21,15, 21-19.
The Chinese, however, will be expected to raise their game again when they take on Denmark’s reigning world champions Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl in the last eight.
In the women’s singles, the race has been blown wide open with the exit of Tine, Germany’s Juliane Schenk, Wang Xin (China) and Petya Nedelcheva (Bulgaria).
Hong Kong’s Chan Tsz Ka and Yip Pui Yin were also responsible for some of the upsets on Thursday with wins over Petya and Juliane respectively. Both players will face Korean opposition with Chan taking on Kim Moon Hi while Yip will play Bae Seung Hee.
In the men’s singles, top seed Lee Chong Wei and Denmark’s No 2 seed Peter Gade moved into the quarter-finals with wins over Germany’s Marc Zwiebler and England’s Rajiv Ouseph respectively.
Chong Wei, the sole Malaysian survivor in the singles after all his teammates crashed out, took 37 minutes to break down Zwiebler’s resistance while Gade was stretched all the way in his 23-21, 22-20 win over Ouseph.

In the quarters, Chong Wei will face a tougher customer in Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana while Gade will have to recover quickly in order to face Korea’s Park Sung Hwan.
In an all-China quarter-final, Chen Long and Bao Chunlai will square off against each other.
Favourites Lee Yong Dae-Jung Jae Sung kept the local fans happy with their progress into the last eight after defeating compatriots Jin Yong Hoon-Kim Dae Sun. The top seeds play teammates Kim Ki Jung-Shin Baek Cheol for a place in the semi-final.
In another interesting match-up, Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen will face China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng in the last eight after both pairs negotiated past their second round opponents comfortably.
However, former world champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen came up against a brick wall when they fell to a three-game defeat at the hands of China’s Zhang Nan-Chai Biao. The Chinese won 21-14, 22-24, 21-10.
