KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have
made life easier for doubles shuttler Wong Pei Tty by excluding her
from two major tournaments – the World Championships and Commonwealth
Games yesterday.
The BAM want Pei Tty to fully recover from a nagging knee injury and come back fresh to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The BAM’s decision to drop Pei Tty was based on a medical report from the National Sports Institute (ISN), which showed that she was not in good condition to play competitively.
Less strain: Wong Pei
Tty (left) won’t feature in the world meet and Commonwealth Games.
The cartilage on her right knee is damaged and Pei Tty risks
more serious injuries if she were to continue playing.
BAM coaching and training committee chairman Ng Chin Chai said that it (the exclusion) was the best decision for Pei Tty.
“We know Pei Tty ... she will fight on court even if she is in pain. But she has pushed herself too much because her knee condition is quite bad. Based on the medical report, she has been advised to go for surgery immediately,” said Chin Chai.
“She has to take a break now and go for proper treatment if she hopes to qualify for the London Olympic Games.”
Chin Chai said that Pei Tty’s partner, Chin Eei Hui, would skip the World Championships but compete in the Commonwealth Games with a new partner.
“Without Pei Tty-Eei Hui, we will not have any representatives in the women’s doubles event at the world meet. But we will still field Eei Hui in the Commonwealth Games. She can play with a youngster,” he said.
Eei Hui is expected to be paired up with either Woon Khe Wei, Ng Hui Lin or Goh Liu Ying for the Commonwealth Games.
For the record, the world meet will be held in Paris from Aug 23-29 and the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi from Oct 3-14.
