Indonesians fall short in Finals

Indonesia's high expectations to end the Kumpoo
Macau Open with a bang ended on a dampening note when they won only one
of the four finals contested at the Cotai Arena on Sunday.
Even then, the one title was already a foregone
conclusion as the mixed doubles was an all-Indonesia final - Ahmad
Tontowi-Lilyana Natsir triumphant against Hendra Aprida Gunawan-Vita
Marissa. Ahmad-Lilyana won 21-14, 21-18.
But that was as far as Indonesia could go as one after the other
tumbled at the USD120,000 prize money event.
Adriyanti Firdasai was the first to fall against a determined and
skilful Li Xuerui of China and it took the latter only 33 minutes to
nail her win with a 21-18, 21-15 win over the Indonesian.
As she showed in her match against former World No 1 Zhou Mi in the
semi-finals, Xuerui pushed Adriyanti to all four corners of the court
and her probing shots always put the Indonesian on the back foot to
eventualy wear down her defence.
Then came Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii. A lot was expected of
them to win the women's doubles crown but Chinese Taipei's Cheng Wen
Hsing-Chien Yu Chin were in uncompromising mood as they rallied from a
game down to beat the Indonesians 16-21, 21-18, 21-16.
Indonesia's final hope of of winning another title evaporated when
the men's dobles pair of Alvent Yulianto-Hendra Aprida Gunawan also
faltered at the final stage.
The Indonesians played well below their capabilities and were
convincingly beaten by Korea's Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong in straight
games. The Koreans won 21-17, 21-15.
In the men's singles, Malaysia's World No 1 Lee Chong Wei hardly
broke sweat after he was given a walkover by Korea's Lee Hyun Il in the
final. The Korean failed to recover from an ankle injury he suffered in
his semi-final win against Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana.
