Rexy thinks Markis- Hendra will not pose a serious threat

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan will make the trip to the World Badmin-ton Championships in Paris from Aug 23-29 after all.
The duo had, a few days ago, threatened to pull out from the world meet following the All-Indonesia Badminton Association’s (PBSI) decision to omit their names for the China Masters.
But Malaysia’s national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky thinks that the troubled duo may not be able to reproduce the form that saw them win the world title in Kuala Lumpur in 2007.
Rexy feels that Markis will be more affected than Hendra over the pullout incident.
“Sometimes, difficult situations make a player more determined to go all out. Other times, challenges can demoralise them. And my suspicion is that Markis and Hendra may be affected,” said Rexy after a training session at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
The PBSI’s decision to omit Markis-Hendra from the China Masters riled up the independent players as they had a contract with their personal sponsors to play in China.
PBSI, however, quickly re-submitted their names and the 2008 Olympic champions will be in Paris in a bid to win their second world title.
Rexy said that if the second-seeded Indonesians misfire in the world meet, it would be a more open affair in the lower half.
“Usually, Markis is the more emotional of the pair and he can be easily distracted. I heard that there were still unsettled business. It will be easier for others if Markis-Kido are not focused in Paris,” said Rexy.
Others in the same half with the Indonesians are Malaysian independent pairs Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Tan Bin Shen-Gan Teik Chai and several top guns – defending champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China, Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong and Taiwanese late bloomers Fang Chien-min-Lee Sheng-mu.
Barring any upsets, Wan Wah-Tan Fook should face Markis-Kido in the third round.
Top seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are in the top half of the draw with South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung, All-England champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark and China’s Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen.
