KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles shuttler Lee Wan Wah will be looking for a new partner after the world championships.
He will be ending a 15-year partnership with Choong Tan Fook and the championships in Paris, which begins on Monday, will be their last major tournament together.
They have two tournaments more as a pair before going separate way. They are the China Masters and Vietnam Open in October.
While Wan Wah will continue a playing career with a new partner, Tan Fook, who is married to Olympic doubles champion Zhang Jiewen, will begin a coaching career with Hong Kong.
On whether he would team up with one of these independent players – Wong Choong Hann, Chan Chong Ming or Chew Choong Eng, Wan Wah said: “So far, I have not decided on my new partner yet. I will wait until the world championships is over.”
Veteran singles shuttler Choong Hann will be an ideal partner for Wan Wah.
All of these former internationals are currently managing their own training centre – Sunsuria Pioneer Badminton Hall in Kota Damansara. They also spar with each other regularly ahead of international tournaments.
“I have decided to play for at least one year more before I follow in the footsteps of Tan Fook,” said Wan Wah, who had not set any expectations on his last outing in the world championships after having gone through ups and down in the last seven outings with Tan Fook.
“Our best outings in the world championships were two semi-final appearances – in 2001 (Seville) and in 2007 (Kuala Lumpur).
“If there were an outing that we would want to forget, it is the one in 1997 in Glasgow when we lost in the opening round.
“For now, our focus is to clear the opening round in Paris. It will get tougher from the second round but we will give our best.”
Wan Wah-Tan Fook will have an opening round match against Germany’s Kristof Hopp-Johannes Schottler and they have two Indonesians pairs – youngsters Rian Sukmawan-Yonathan Surytama Dasuki and former champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan – in their path to reach the quarter-finals.
