PETALING JAYA: Scratch pair Chin Eei Hui-Goh Liu Ying may turn
out to be a viable option for Malaysia in their bid to defend the
women’s doubles gold at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games next month.
Eei Hui-Liu Ying successfully cleared their first test when they beat China’s Nan Qiao-Wu Qianqian 21-11, 21-12 to reach the second round of the China Masters in Changzhou yesterday.
The victory sets them up for a date with another Chinese pair – Bao Yixin-Lu Lu – for a place in the last eight.
Eliminated: Chan
Peng Soon (left) and Goh Liu Ying were bundled out of the China Masters
mixed doubles event after losing 19-21, 17-21 to Fran Kurniawan-Pia
Zebadiah Bernadet of Indonesia.
Eei Hui was left with
the option of having to partner either Liu Ying or Woon Khe Wei for the
Commonwealth Games after her regular partner Wong Pei Tty was given time
off to recover from a career threatening knee injury.
Pei Tty is out of action for the rest of the year as she needs at least six months before she can resume competitive badminton after undergoing knee surgery.
Eei Hui-Pei Tty delivered one of the four gold medals for Malaysia at the last Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Women’s doubles coach Pang Cheh Chang said that Eei Hui, however, was likely to partner Khe Wei in her bid to defend the individual title for Malaysia.
”However, we are not sure yet whether to put Eei Hui-Khe Wei for the mixed team event.
“There is an option for Eei Hui to partner Liu Ying as a scratch pair for the mixed team event and rest Khe Wei.
”We will see how they complement each other in training,” he said.
With Wong Mew Choo looking shaky in the women’s singles and likely to have problems getting the better of the likes of Saina Nehwal, Malaysia will definitely need a vital point from the women’s doubles if they are to come out on tops in the mixed team event.
India can possibly trouble Malaysia in the mixed team event as they have good combinations in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Asian Championships mixed doubles champions Chan Peng Soon-Liu Ying fell at the first hurdle when they were sent packing 19-21, 17-21 by Indonesians Fran Kurniawan-Pia Zebadiah Bernadet.
Ong Jian Guo-Chong Sook Chin were the only Malaysians left in the mixed doubles after beating China’s Gen Li-Xua Huan 21-13, 21-17.
The newly-formed pairing of Mohd Tairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock flopped in their first Super Series outing, losing 17-21, 12-21 to second seeds Guo Zhendong-Xu Chen of China.
Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng, the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games gold medallists, also lost
16-21, 13-21 to seventh seeds Kim Ki-jung-Shin Baek-cheol of South Korea.
However, four other pairs – Peng Soon-Khim Wah, Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, Ong Jian Guo-Goh Wei Shem and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen – made it to the second round.
