Wang Lin to undergo surgery for knee injury

CHANGZHOU: China’s world badminton champion Wang Lin will go under the knife and is expected to take about six months to recover from a knee injury she suffered in the China Masters last week.
China’s chief coach Li Yongbo said doctors had ascertained that the 21-year-old tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in her left knee in her first-round loss to Indonesia’s Maria Febe Kusumastuti.
He said the newly-crowned world champion would receive the best treatment for her injury and the team were preparing relevant visa documents for her trip to Germany or the United States to undergo surgery.
“Because of the unexpected injury of Wang Lin, it has caused some setback to our plan to produce a leader among our four to five women’s singles players,” he said after the finals of the China Masters here yesterday.
Yongbo said three of their promising shuttlers Wang Lin, Wang Xin and Wang Shixian had shown their ability by getting into the semi-finals of the world championships in Paris last month.
The other trio who also stand a chance to become China’s leading women’s singles player are Jiang Yanjiao, Lu Lan and Wang Yihan.
Now that Wang Lin is injured it leaves room for the rest to take on the role. Yongbo revealed that Wang Xin, Wang Shixian, Jiang Yanjiao and Lu Lan would be named in the women’s team event for the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.
