PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Mohd Hafiz Hashim was sent packing but
two men’s doubles back-up pairs – Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Chan
Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah – made it a great outing for Malaysia on a day
full of upsets in the Japan Open in Tokyo yesterday.
Hafiz fell 21-16, 13-21, 12-21 to Japan’s Kenichi Tago in the first round. Tago’s reward is a date with another Malaysian, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, in the second round.
Top seed Chong Wei, who is making a comeback after sustaining a back injury at the World Championships in Paris, was in an uncompromising mood as he ripped apart R.M.V. Gurusaidatt of India 21-5, 21-9 in just 26 minutes.
While Chong Wei showed that he was shaping up well for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next month, Hafiz’s defeat was certainly a big setback to Malaysia’s hopes of a 1-2 finish in the men’s singles event in India.
It was also the end of the road for Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in the Japan Open when he lost 21-18, 21-23, 19-21 to Japan’s Sho Sasaki.
The other seeded players – China’s Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai and Denmark’s Peter-Gade Christensen – safely reached the second round.
The day certainly belonged to national coach Tan Kim Her’s charges – Hee Chun-Wee Kiong and Peng Soon-Khim Wah.
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong defeated South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong 21-16, 21-14 to check into the second round in style.
It was sweet revenge for the Asiad-bound shuttlers, having lost to the Koreans in the opening round of the China Masters last week.
Peng Soon-Khim Wah also played superbly to beat third seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark 18-21, 21-19, 21-10. It was the Malaysian pairs’ first win over the All-England runners-up.
Today, Hee Chun-Wee Kiong and Peng Soon-Khim Wah will take on Yoshiteru Hirobe-Kenta Kazuno of Japan and Indonesians Luluk Hadiyanto-Candra Wijaya for places in the quarter-finals respectively.
Malaysia’s World Championships silver medallists and top seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong also cleared their first round hurdles convincingly, beating Shohei Hoshino-Akira Kobayahsi of Japan 21-14, 21-16.
