Choong Hann keeps final hopes alive

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian veteran Wong Choong Hann (pic) kept alive his hopes of making it to the men’s singles final of the Copenhagen Masters tournament after chalking a straight-game win over Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus yesterday.
Choong Hann beat the young Dane 21-16, 21-16 in his second match in Group B. He had lost 18-21, 23-21, 19-21 to Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand on Monday and the advantage is not on his side to advance to the final.
He has to hope for Vittinghus to beat Boonsak in straight games to pull through.
The other Malaysian in the fray, Liew Daren, was eliminated from the annual year-end invitational tournament after losing 16-21, 25-23, 17-21 to Dick Palyama of Holland for his second defeat in Group A. He lost 14-21, 16-21 to home favourite Peter Gade-Christensen on Monday.
World No. 3 ranked Christensen, who is seeking to win the title for a record 10th time, has been struggling with a back injury and he was happy with his fitness level.
“It was a test for my back and to see if my game is getting better.
“And I think it is better,” he said.
Hong Kong Open champions Joachim Fischer-Christinna Pedersen continued their great form by booking a place in the mixed doubles final.
The Danish combination beat world No. 3 Vita Marissa-Hendra Gunawan of Indonesia 21-18, 21-16 to set up a title clash against either team-mates Mikkel Delbo Larsen-Kamilla Rytter Juhl or Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam.
Top Danish women’s singles player Tine Baun is one match away from retaining the title. She beat Kristina Ludikova of the Czech Republic 21-10, 21-13 and will play against either Salakjit Ponsana of Thailand or Pi Hongyan of France for the title today.
