PETALING JAYA: It will be a tough act for Lee Chong Wei to
play as though nothing is bothering him in the absence of his coach
Misbun Sidek.
But he will not allow the shocking resignation of Misbun to distract him too much in his task to retain the Super Series Masters Finals title in the tournament beginning in Taipeh tomorrow.
Chong Wei said that he would treat Misbun’s decision to quit as national coach as a temporary setback.
“It is not easy to play in a tournament when the issue involving my coach is at the back of my mind. But I am confident that this matter will be resolved as quickly as possible,” he said.
“This is an important month for me. There are three big tournaments and I have won all three before. I want to do well again.”
He is the top seed for the season-opening Super Series Malaysian Open from Jan 18-23 and also the Premier Super Series Korean Open from Jan 25-30.
“I hope this matter will be solved amicably by the time I return from Taiwan.
“I want Misbun to be back with me when I compete in the Malaysian Open,” he said.
In the absence of China’s Lin Dan, Chong Wei has a good chance to be crowned the Masters Finals champion for a third consecutive time.
Among the top contenders are Denmark’s Peter-Gade Christiansen and Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat.
But China’s Chen Long is also seen as the dark horse.
Malaysia other interest in the Masters Finals is in the men’s doubles.
And Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will bid to regain the title they won in the 2008 season.
But it will be tough for them to emerge as the champions in the company of South Koreans Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae, Chinese Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan.
