BAM go ahead with tournament plans for their shuttlers

PETALING JAYA: The absence of Misbun Sidek did not prevent the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) coaching and training committee from going ahead with a detailed plan for Lee Chong Wei.
The committee met yesterday and it was agreed that the world No. 1 will take part in a total of 14 international tournaments this year. And the targets are to peak in three events – All-England (March 8-13, Birmingham), world championships (Aug 8-14, London) and the SEA Games (Nov 11-25, Indonesia).
Singles coordinator Rashid Sidek presented the plans for Chong Wei and those for the other elite shuttlers — Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Chan Kwong Beng, Tan Chun Seang, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren.
The committee chairman, Ng Chin Chai, said that it was business as usual for the coaches.
“We did not bring up the matter on Misbun today. The BAM exco will meet on Jan 12 and on the agenda is his resignation as a coach in the national team. Our president will make some announcements then,” he said.
“Today, it’s all about our periodisation programme for our shuttlers,” said Chin Chai.
“It was proposed for Chong Wei to compete in 17 tournaments but three were dropped. The top pair, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, will also compete in 14 tournaments.
“We also decided that the back-up shuttlers will compete in at least eight tournaments. The exposure will facilitate our efforts to bridge the gap between the back-up players and the seniors.”
Besides Rashid, the meeting was attended by high performance director Datuk James Selvaraj and six other coordinators — Rexy Mainaky (men’s elite doubles), Tan Kim Her (men’s back-up doubles), Hendrawan (men’s back-up singles), Wong Tat Meng (women’s elite and back-up singles), Pang Cheh Chang (women’s elite and back-up doubles) and Jeremy Gan (mixed doubles).
Chin Chai added that they had identified those to gear up for qualifcation for the 2012 London Olympics.
The BAM players in the Olympic programme are Chong Wei, Hafiz (men’s singles); Wong Mew Choo, Lydia Cheah, Julia Wong (women’s singles); Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock, Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang (men’s doubles); Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui, Ng Hui Lin-Ng Hui Ern (women’s doubles); and Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, Ong Jiao Guo-Sabrina Chong (mixed doubles).
Yesterday, the committee also introduced a performance merit system to keep close tabs on the national coaches.
Chin Chai also announced that four players – Lim Yu Sheng, Zairul Anuar Zainuddin, Nairul Suhada Abdul Latif and Nurhani Abdul Aziz – have been dropped from their programme.
