Chong Wei can deliver joy to his coach with third Finals title

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei has been told to win the Super Series Masters Finals for his coach Misbun Sidek after the shuttler stormed into the final in Taipei yesterday.
World No. 1 Chong Wei will be hoping to emerge triumphant for the third time in a row when he takes on Denmark’s Peter-Gade Christensen for the title.
Yesterday, Chong Wei overcame a strong assault from Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand before prevailing 21-17, 21-18 in 43 minutes.

Veteran Christensen also had to go the distance to score a sensational 21-19, 21-18 win over a stubborn Chen Long of China in the other semi-final.
Chong Wei had scored an easy win over the Dane in a Group A match on Friday but, this time, he can expect a more determined challenge from his opponent.
After all, there is a whopping US$40,000 prize money at stake.
But national singles coach Rashid Sidek believes there is an additional factor for Chong Wei to start the year with a bang.
He hopes that Chong Wei would take down Christensen to bring some joy to Misbun, who resigned on Dec 31.
“Chong Wei’s win may make Misbun re-think his decision to quit. And this will be the extra push for Chong Wei to do well,” said Rashid.
Rashid also encouraged Chong Wei to continue to be focused on his mission in Taipei.
“He was in control in the match against Boonsak today. The Thai tried to pressurise him but Chong Wei stayed cool and composed,” he said.
“Chong Wei has won all his matches in straight games so far. I hope he will keep the momentum going.
“Peter took it easy during the group match but, this time, he will certainly show his true colours by fighting for every point.”
In the men’s doubles event, Carsten Mogensen-Mathias Boe of Denmark justified their world No. 1 status by defeating China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng 21-10, 18-21, 21-19 in a thrilling match to set up a final date with South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung.
Yong-dae-Jae-sung ended the fairytale run of Chinese youngsters Chai Biao-Zhang Nan with a 21-15, 21-11 win in just 30 minutes.
There was an upset in the women’s singles when South Korean Bae Youn-joo prevented an all-Chinese affair by beating top seed Wang Yihan 21-18, 16-21, 21-16 to set up a showdown with Wang Shixian.
