Mew Choo shines again at favourite haunt

WONG Mew Choo again showed that the Putra Stadium is her good hunting ground.
Yesterday, she pulled the rug from under Lu Lan of China with a superb comeback 13-21, 22-20, 21-12 win to march into the second round of the women’s singles competition.
In 2007, Mew Choo also enjoyed good fortune at the same venue when she reached the final of the Malaysia Open and dumped Xie Xinfang of China to qualify for the quarter-finals of the world championships.
Today, Mew Choo will be out to keep her momentum going when she takes on top seed Wang Xin of China, a player whom she lost to twice before.
Mew Choo was delighted with her good start, especially after taking almost two months to recover from knee injuries.
“I was able to put into practice what I had learnt in training. But I nearly paid the price for using the wrong game plan,” she said.
“But I did not give up and continued to psyche myself up. Lu Lan appeared tired in the later part of the game and I took advantage of that.
“I am thankful to my coach (Wong Tat Meng). We have good communication and this good relationship enabled me to bring out the best in me.”
On her match against Wang Xin, Mew Choo said: “I am the underdog and I will be out to give her a good run.”
Mew Choo is the only Malaysian left in the women’s singles following the exit of Lydia Cheah and Tee Jing Yi.
In the women’s doubles, Vivian Hoo-Lim Yin Loo checked into the second round but their challenge is expected to end today against China’s Cheng Shu-Ma Jin.
